About Shillong Teer
Shillong Teer is one of the oldest and most celebrated archery-based traditional games in India. It is held at the iconic Polo Ground in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, and is organized by the Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association (KHASA) under the Meghalaya Amusements and Participation Tax Act. KHASA is one of the largest archery associations in Asia, with thousands of licensed archers participating across multiple clubs.
How Shillong Teer works
Each game day, a group of trained archers shoot a fixed number of arrows at a cylindrical wooden target placed at a regulated distance. Officials count the total number of successful arrow hits after each round. The last two digits of this hit count become the officially declared result number for that round, known as FR (First Round) and SR (Second Round).
Result timings
First Round (FR): Shooting begins at 3:30 PM IST. Result declared around 3:45 PM IST.
Second Round (SR): Shooting begins at 4:30 PM IST. Result declared around 4:45 PM IST.
Shillong Teer is played Monday to Saturday. No results are declared on Sundays or Meghalaya public holidays.
How to participate
Players purchase numbered tickets (00–99) from licensed Teer counters before each round. If the ticket number matches the declared FR or SR result, the ticket holder wins the corresponding prize. Ticket counters operate from early morning until approximately 15 minutes before each round begins. Only licensed Teer counters are legally permitted to sell tickets under the Meghalaya Amusements Act.
Cultural and historical significance
Teer has deep roots in Khasi culture and was traditionally practiced as an archery sport long before being formalized into a regulated game. Today, Shillong Teer is a legal, government-regulated activity unique to Meghalaya. It draws large daily followings not just in Shillong, but across Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and other states of Northeast India, with tens of thousands of people checking results every day.
